Error – Access denied for {IP Address}. The host has been blocked because of too many authentication failures.

If you enter the user id and password wrongly in Webmin or VirtualMin more than 5 times consequetively, your IP address is blocked.

The following error is shown in the browser:

Error - Access denied for [IP Address]. The host has been blocked because of too many authentication failures.

The first thing is to clear the IP Address from the block.

By default, no IP is blacklisted for more than a few minutes.

You can see what IP’s have been blocked with the command:

 tail  /var/webmin/miniserv.error

All IP blocks can be removed by restarting webmin or Virtual with the command:

 /etc/init.d/webmin restart

Thereafter, if you don’t remember the password or if there is corruption in the database, you can reset the root password with the command:

 passwd

Once the password is changed, you will be able to login to webmin/ virtualmin
